One person was killed in a Ukrainian drone strike in Russia’s western Bryansk region overnight, the regional authorities said on Monday, as Russia and Ukraine continued to launch mixed airstrikes at each other.

A Ukrainian drone struck a minibus in the Bryansk region border village of Pogar, killing the driver and injuring five passengers, regional Governor Alexander Bogomaz said.

The strike came just hours after a similar attack by Russian forces in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region, where Governor Oleh Hryhorov said a drone strike on a minibus bound for the regional capital Sumy on Sunday afternoon killed one person and injured a further 10.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said on Monday morning that its air defences had downed 193 Ukrainian drones launched at 13 Russian regions overnight, including 34 on a flightpath to Moscow.

Flights were temporarily halted at two Moscow airports due to the drone threat, while independent Russian news outlets reported fires at at least two locations on the outskirts of the capital following the attack.

Ukraine’s Air Force said that Russia had attacked Ukraine with 100 drones overnight, of which its air defence systems intercepted 66. Strikes from 26 of them were recorded at nine locations across Ukraine, it added.

On Sunday, Russia attacked Kyiv for the second night in a row, killing three people and injuring 31 more in a drone assault Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said was designed “to cause as many civilian casualties as possible”.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday evening that Russia had attacked Ukraine with almost 1,200 drones and 50 missiles over the past week alone.

“Protection against such a threat can only be a collective effort — no nation in the world should have to stand alone against it”, Zelensky said.
