A thermal power plant caught fire in the Moscow region town of Shatura on Sunday morning after being targeted by multiple drones in an attack carried out by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russian Telegram channel ASTRA reported, citing local residents.
In footage posted online shortly after Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said on Telegram that two drones “en route to Moscow” had been shot down by Russian air defence systems, a fireball can be seen in the distance over the Shatura Power Station.
Several people were trapped under the rubble at the plant following the attack, according to eyewitnesses cited by Readkova, a Telegram breaking news channel, which also said that residents of Shatura had been left without power and hot water.
In a Telegram post on Sunday, Moscow region Governor Andrey Vorobyov confirmed that Shatura Power Station had caught fire after several drones were “destroyed by air defences and crashed into the plant’s grounds,” causing a fire to break out, which, he said, had later been contained by the emergency services.
Vorobyov subsequently announced that both power and water supplies had been restored, with work still underway to repair heating for Shatura residents, though he gave no official information about the number of people injured in the attack.
On Sunday, Russia’s Defence Ministry announced that 75 Ukrainian drones had been intercepted overnight, including two in the Moscow region. Elsewhere, 36 Ukrainian drones were reportedly shot down over the Black Sea, another 10 over annexed Crimea, and a further nine over the western Bryansk region.
The town of Shatura, located some 120 km east of Moscow, has a population of about 33,000, and its power station, one of the oldest in Russia, produces heating for residents of the Moscow region.
