Moscow court rules to keep director Evgenia Berkovich and playwright Svetlana Petriychuk, accused of ‘justifying terrorism’, in custody

The Moscow City Court has ruled to keep theatre director Evgenia Berkovich in a pre-trial detention facility, a Novaya Gazeta Europe correspondent reports from court.

The Moscow City Court has also ruled to keep playwright Svetlana Petriychuk, also charged with “justifying terrorism”, in custody.

Berkovich is accused of “justifying terrorism” over her play Finist, the Brave Falcon, which tells the stories of women who decided to marry radical Islamists and move to Syria. The play is based on real events.

Evgenia Berkovich is accused of “justifying terrorism” alongside playwright Svetlana Petriychuk. The women were arrested on 5 May. They have not admitted their guilt.

Over 16,000 people have signed an open letter in support of Evgenia Berkovich and Svetlana Petriychuk.
